Overview of PocketELogs

5000% improvement

A recent user described the new product PocketELogs to be a 5000% improvement over the original product. After serveral years of supporting the old product and helping students with installation problems, the PDA program was completely rewritten to enhance the end-user experience and successfully capture and post encounters to the remote ELogs website.

Change in development platform

Not that the original program was that bad, it was designed with using a simple Rapid Development Toolkit (RDT). As more and more requests were made, they could either not be accomplished with the RDT or the RDT changes were cumbersome to make and even more difficult to roll-out.

  • Manage Favorites

  • Continuous, smart updating of data on handheld
  • Ability to suspend encounters which you cannot complete - may be resumed later
Back to top Integration

Each day changes made by campus administrators and faculty members to school specific tables are staged for synchronization the the PDA. This means that an additional preceptor added to the preceptor list will be added to the handheld the next day (during synchronization).

Why try to remember or write down specific data captured during your rounds? Simply tap the specific data into your mobile PDA device and you are finished. The data is captured and then posted on the ELogs website during your next PDA synchronization. PDA devices today are mobile, easy to pocket and are useful beyond just using them for recording clinical experiences. A lot of information and power is stored within a small framework.

PocketELogs has been designed to be completely mobile and only need periodic synchronization. During synchronization, PocketELogs checks for the presence of an Internet connection. If no connection is available, the completed and released encounters are retained on the handheld until an Internet connection is avaialble.

Large databases such as CPT, ICD9 and Axis I (Psynch DSM IV Codes) are easily navigated through our new drilldown. For these values simply, double tap on the field to invoke the drilldown. A list of possible chapters is initially presented for a choice. After selecting the chapter, further choices can be made to "drill-down" into more detail until you locate the applicable code. Simply double tap the code (designated with a bullet point) to choose the code.

Drilldown lookups can also be invoked from the main screen without actually starting an encounter.

Current Data

School specific data is consistently being altered. Faculty members and campus administrators can make changes to the ELogs website for majors, courses, preceptors (sites), and faculty lists. These changes are now propogated to the handhelds automatically.

An overnight process determines if any changes were made to any schools 4 core tables (additions or removals) and stages a change to the PDA. Upon the next synchronization, the conduit determines what version of data the handheld possesses compared to the central master table. If the master table has a newer revision, the changed table is updated on the handheld. No intervention is required by the student.

Long lists where favorites and defaults have been selected are maintained through the update and not lost.

Installation Ease

Installation has been streamlined. Simply download a small installer package to your desktop (via the Internet) and run the installer. The installer will setup the minimal files on your desktop and queue the handheld software to be installed on your PDA.

There is no more requirements to update your desktop for certain patches as the desktop is not used to store data anymore.
